HSE Manager

About the role

The HSE Manager will lead health, safety and environmental initiatives for a growing scrap metal recycling business operating across three local sites in Preston. Reporting to the Operations Director, you will work hands‑on with operatives and senior leaders to embed a proactive safety culture and ensure full regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain HSE policies, procedures and ISO management systems across all sites.
• Conduct regular HSE inspections, risk assessments, audits and incident investigations.
• Manage work instructions, record keeping, internal and external audits, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.
• Monitor environmental permits, licences and performance, driving continuous improvement in waste, emissions and pollution control.
• Liaise with regulatory bodies, external stakeholders and senior management on HSE matters.
• Promote a positive safety culture through training, communication and visible leadership.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a health, safety and environmental leadership role within an industrial or recycling environment.
• Hands‑on approach with the ability to work alongside operatives on the shop floor.
• Strong knowledge of UK HSE legislation, ISO standards and environmental regulations.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence behaviour at all organisational levels.
