Inquest and Civil Litigation Lawyer

About the role

A leading public sector organisation is seeking an experienced Inquest and Civil Litigation Lawyer to join its in‑house Legal Services team. You will provide specialist advice on coronial law, manage inquest and civil litigation matters, and support organisational learning from legal outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage inquest and civil litigation cases from instruction through to conclusion.
• Provide specialist legal advice to senior leaders on complex, sensitive, and high‑risk matters.
• Ensure compliance with coronial law, civil litigation procedures and human‑rights obligations, including Article 2 considerations.
• Oversee disclosure processes, evidence preparation and multi‑agency coordination.
• Represent the organisation in legal proceedings and support external counsel where required.
• Advise on litigation strategy, risk mitigation and settlement options.
• Identify learning from legal outcomes and support improvements in organisational practice.
• Collaborate with Legal Services, operational teams and external stakeholders to ensure effective case management.

Required profile

• Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with a current practising certificate.
• Significant experience managing inquests and civil litigation from start to finish.
• Strong knowledge of coronial law, civil litigation procedures and relevant human‑rights considerations.
• Proven ability to advise senior stakeholders on complex and sensitive legal matters.
• Excellent analytical skills, professional judgement and the capacity to manage high‑risk cases.
