Interim Head of Legal – Litigation (6‑month contract)

About the role

This interim position leads the litigation function for a major local authority in the Midlands for an initial 3‑6 month period. The role is suitable for an experienced solicitor or barrister who thrives in fast‑paced, high‑stakes environments and can inspire a high‑performing legal team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage complex litigation matters, including housing, employment, civil cases and prosecutions.
• Provide strategic legal advice to senior stakeholders and ensure compliance with legislation and internal governance.
• Promote knowledge sharing, continuous improvement and best practice across the legal department.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, performance and resource allocation.
• Represent the council externally, building strong relationships with partners and peers.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor or barrister with a minimum of 5 years post‑qualification experience.
• Demonstrable experience in local authority litigation, covering housing, employment and civil law.
• Proven leadership and management experience of at least 12 months.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills, capable of influencing senior decision‑makers.
