Lead Design Engineer – Mechanical Projects

About the role
We are seeking an experienced Lead Design Engineer to drive the mechanical design of large‑scale projects within heavy‑industry sectors such as Oil & Gas and Power. Based in Manchester, you will lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust, compliant solutions from concept through to site installation.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of mechanical engineering projects from concept to completion.
- Produce and review detailed engineering drawings, 3‑D models and technical documentation.
- Oversee material handling systems, heavy fabrication, welding and on‑site installation activities.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, production and site teams to ensure practical, efficient designs.
- Ensure all designs meet relevant standards, specifications and health & safety requirements.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers and design staff.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers and internal departments to guarantee successful project delivery.
- Support continuous improvement and contribute to engineering best practice.
Required profile
- Proven experience as a Lead or Senior Design Engineer.
- Degree, HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Ideally 10 years of engineering and design experience, with at least 3 years in material handling, heavy fabrication, welding or large‑scale project delivery.
- Experience in Oil & Gas, Power or other heavy‑engineering sectors.
- Strong understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent problem‑solving, communication and organisational abilities.
- Full UK driving licence desirable.
