Learning Support Assistant (BSL) – Secondary School (Fixed‑Term)

About the role

This fixed‑term position supports Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing pupils in a secondary school in West Sussex. Working closely with senior leaders and the SEND team, you will help students access the curriculum and participate fully in school life.

Key responsibilities

• Use British Sign Language to facilitate communication between students, staff and peers.
• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support during lessons, break times, extracurricular activities and educational visits.
• Adapt learning materials and classroom activities to meet individual sensory needs.
• Promote independence, confidence and engagement in learning.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents and external professionals.
• Offer personal care support where required, following training and guidance.

Required profile

• Minimum BSL Level 2 qualification (Level 3 desirable).
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Patience, resilience and adaptability.
• Passion for supporting young people with additional needs.
• Strong organisational ability and initiative.
• Experience with Deaf students or in a care/support setting is advantageous.

Required skills

• Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) at Level 2 or above.
