Legal Counsel – AI & Government Partnerships

About the role

Google DeepMind is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide proactive legal guidance for its cutting‑edge AI research and commercial activities. You will work closely with researchers, product teams, and external partners to navigate complex legal issues in AI, government collaborations, and technology procurement.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements—including collaboration, R&D, licensing, services, and procurement contracts—with university, commercial, and government partners.
• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice to functional areas across Google DeepMind to ensure smooth business operations.
• Guide clients through all phases of the contract lifecycle, from initial shaping to post‑sign implementation and compliance.
• Advise on the full lifecycle of AI model development, covering ideation, training, testing, validation, publication, commercial strategy, partnership strategy, and open‑release considerations.
• Support the legal team’s objectives and key results tracking initiatives.

Required profile

• JD, LL.B., or equivalent degree with at least 3 years of post‑qualification attorney experience in government, in‑house, or law‑firm settings.
• Minimum 3 years of experience negotiating government partnerships, procurement agreements, or advising on commercial and research matters for a technology company.
• Demonstrated ability to make judgment calls and consider real‑world consequences of legal decisions.
• Strong collaborative mindset, capable of operating independently within a highly interdisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Experience advising on AI, national security, cybersecurity, or public‑sector matters.
• Understanding of opportunities and risks associated with AI agents, models, and systems.
• Ability to partner with executives on AI‑related legal issues.
