Legal Counsel

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Legal Counsel to join our Edinburgh team. Working in a hybrid model (minimum 40% office), you will provide clear, practical legal advice across disputes, complaints, regulation and pensions, supporting the business in managing risk and making informed decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide straightforward legal advice on disputes and complaints, outlining risks and next steps.
• Support resolution of issues before they reach courts, the Ombudsman or the Pensions Regulator.
• Assist with external cases, collaborating with senior team members to manage risk and outcomes.
• Interpret regulatory guidance, particularly from the Pensions Regulator, and help apply it in practice.
• Manage and instruct external legal advisers when required.
• Represent the business in meetings with external bodies such as the Ombudsman or regulators, with team support.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor or barrister in Scotland and/or England.
• Experience in dispute resolution, litigation or complaints handling, preferably within financial services or pensions.
• Good understanding of contract law and the regulatory environment.
• Exposure to working with regulators such as the Pensions Regulator.
• Strong written communication skills and ability to draft clear legal documents.
• Confidence communicating with a range of stakeholders in a practical, approachable style.
• Good judgement, willingness to learn and ability to simplify complex issues.

• Competitive salary £70,000‑£75,000 depending on experience.
