M Instructor – Prison Workshop

About the role

The M Instructor will lead the metal workshop at HMYOI Portland, delivering training, supervision and safety oversight for prisoners engaged in production activities. The role combines hands‑on instruction with administrative duties to ensure a secure, efficient and compliant workshop environment.

Key responsibilities

• Select and induct prisoners for workshop participation, covering health and safety, COSHH, and safe use of machinery and tools.
• Maintain secure inventory of tools, equipment and raw materials, and oversee quality standards and contractual output.
• Supervise prisoners, manage performance, motivation, discipline and development, and conduct metal‑detector scans before and after workshop sessions.
• Contribute to product development reviews, risk assessments and health‑and‑safety documentation.
• Complete ACCT, VRIR and SIR forms, support parole and sentence planning, and record attendance, hours worked and wages.
• Provide administrative support, prepare documentation for managers and update workshop systems.

Required profile

• Experience supervising individuals in a secure or custodial environment.
• Ability to tailor training to individual learning needs and manage workshop schedules.
• Strong communication skills for reporting to case managers and participating in meetings.
