Manual Machinist – Precision Lathes

About the role

Our client, a major supplier of high‑specification engineering equipment, is looking for an experienced Manual Machinist to operate manual lathes and produce precision components in their busy workshop in Abingdon.

Key responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual lathes to produce precision components to specification.
• Produce parts to tight tolerances using engineering drawings and blueprints.
• Carry out turning, boring, trepanning, roughing and finishing operations.
• Work with stainless steel, alloys, brass, copper and plastics.
• Use hand tools and basic maths for measurements and adjustments.
• Perform routine maintenance on machinery and tools.
• Collaborate with team members in fabrication and assembly processes.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Required profile

• Previous machining experience.
• Good understanding of engineering drawings.
• Experience using manual lathes.
• Willingness to learn larger machines such as Binns & Berry and a horizontal borer.
• Preferably a time‑served apprentice with a few years post‑apprenticeship experience.
• Self‑motivated, enthusiastic and able to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

• Salary £30,784 – £38,480 per annum (£16 – £20 per hour depending on experience).
