Mechanical Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join an established engineering consultancy in Plymouth, supporting cutting‑edge marine projects. The role involves working closely with customers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver mechanical solutions for both nuclear and non‑nuclear assets.

Key responsibilities

• Engage directly with customers to capture requirements and provide mechanical engineering support, including attendance at Authorisation Group meetings.
• Conduct periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and specify replacement equipment or components.
• Scope, design and propose modifications to existing assets or new facilities, producing configuration documentation for permanent changes.
• Maintain technical drawings and documentation, and approve technical submissions before customer delivery.
• Liaise with multi‑disciplinary teams to align mechanical support with broader infrastructure projects.
• Support installation, commissioning and testing phases, and contribute to risk assessments and progress reporting.

Required profile

• Foundation degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Relevant experience in a highly regulated industry such as nuclear, maritime, infrastructure or oil & gas.
• Proven ability to work through the full lifecycle of mechanical projects, from concept to maintenance.

Required skills

• Knowledge of hydraulics, pumps, valves and pipework.
• Experience with low‑pressure and high‑pressure air systems, cooling and chiller systems.
• Proficiency in producing and interpreting mechanical engineering drawings.
• Ability to perform hand calculations and mechanical maintenance tasks.
• Experience in the design process and preparation of design substantiation documentation.

What we offer

• Salary between £40,000 and £50,000 per year, dependent on experience.
• Up to 8 % pension match, 25 days holiday and a company health plan.
• Hybrid working model – two days on‑site in Plymouth each week.
