Mental Health Assistant / Aspiring Therapist (Reading)

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Mental Health Assistant to support children and young people aged 5‑19 in a specialist SEN and SEMH school in Reading. This full‑time, long‑term position offers hands‑on experience working with pupils who have autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma‑related behaviours and other social‑emotional needs.

Key responsibilities

• Assist pupils with emotional regulation, self‑esteem and behaviour management.
• Implement therapeutic and trauma‑informed practices within classroom settings.
• Collaborate closely with SEN professionals, therapists and teachers to ensure consistent care.
• Help create a safe, calm and nurturing learning environment.
• Support the development of individualized strategies to promote student engagement.

Required profile

• Recent graduate or final‑year student in Psychology, Counselling, Education, Criminology or related field.
• Strong empathy, resilience and a genuine passion for child mental health.
• Willingness to learn and apply therapeutic techniques under supervision.
