National Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer Lead

About the role

The National Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer Lead provides system‑wide professional and clinical leadership for the safe use and management of controlled drugs across the NHS. Working within the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer England's team, the role shapes policy, guides practice and ensures public confidence in controlled‑drug governance.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver the controlled drugs accountable officer function at regional and national levels.
• Lead the Local Intelligence Function, collaborating with NHS bodies, police, and regulatory organisations.
• Produce high‑quality policy guidance and advice on controlled‑drug issues, including public inquiries and incidents of concern.
• Provide clinical input to legislation and service‑delivery strategies related to controlled drugs.
• Support NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care in commissioning and optimisation of controlled‑drug care.
• Identify innovation opportunities and forge partnerships to improve outcomes.
• Maintain public confidence through engagement, speaking events and transparent communication.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in pharmacy or controlled‑drug management within the NHS.
• Demonstrated leadership in multi‑stakeholder environments.
• Strong understanding of relevant legislation, policy development and public health implications.
• Proven ability to influence at national level and drive strategic initiatives.
