Payroll Administrator – Workday (Fixed‑Term)

About the role

Howdens Joinery is seeking a Payroll Administrator on a fixed‑term contract until the end of 2026. Based in Watford, you will join a busy, supportive payroll team to ensure employees are paid accurately, on time, and in line with legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Process payroll changes (starters, leavers, salary amendments, allowances, deductions) using Workday.
• Administer statutory payments and deductions such as SSP, SMP, PAYE, and National Insurance.
• Handle tax code updates and related payroll documentation.
• Generate, check and process weekly timesheets.
• Conduct payroll audits and checks to maintain data accuracy and compliance.
• Support year‑end payroll activities and assist with audit requirements.
• Investigate and resolve payroll queries from employees and stakeholders.
• Identify and address issues that could affect timely payroll delivery.
• Collaborate with Payroll, HR and other business areas to deliver excellent customer service.
• Stay up‑to‑date with payroll legislation and best practice.

Required profile

• Previous payroll administration and processing experience within Workday (essential).
• Good understanding of payroll procedures and HMRC legislation.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Excellent organisational and prioritisation abilities.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
• Effective communication skills and ability to build relationships at all levels.
• Proactive problem‑solving attitude and focus on continuous improvement.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Positive, flexible and team‑focused mindset.
• Experience in a retail, manufacturing or fast‑paced environment is desirable.
