Planning Team Manager – Development Management Leader

About the role

Hays is working with a progressive local authority to recruit a Development Management Team Leader on an interim basis. The role will lead a team of planning officers and manage a portfolio of major and complex planning applications.

Key responsibilities

• Manage, mentor and support a team of Development Management officers.
• Lead on major, strategic and complex planning applications.
• Ensure performance targets and statutory deadlines are met.
• Provide expert advice on planning legislation, policy and development management matters.
• Oversee preparation of officer reports and recommendations.
• Represent the service at Planning Committee and stakeholder meetings.
• Manage relationships with applicants, developers, elected members and external consultees.
• Support service improvement initiatives and contribute to the wider planning function.

Required profile

• Degree qualification in Town Planning or a related discipline.
• MRTPI membership desirable.
• Extensive Development Management experience within a local authority.
• Proven experience leading or managing planning teams.
• Track record of handling major and complex planning applications.
• Strong knowledge of planning legislation and development management processes.
• Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience presenting reports and recommendations at Planning Committee.
