Principal Ecologist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to lead ecological projects for a leading environmental consultancy in Cambridge. The role involves delivering surveys, assessments, mitigation designs and planning support for a variety of development, infrastructure and renewable energy schemes across the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Lead ecological surveys from inception to delivery, ensuring high‑quality data collection.
• Prepare detailed ecological reports, impact assessments and mitigation design proposals.
• Coordinate with clients, planning authorities and multidisciplinary teams to secure project approvals.
• Mentor and develop junior ecologists, contributing to business growth.
• Manage project budgets, timelines and stakeholder communications.

Required profile

• Significant experience in ecological consultancy, preferably within the UK.
• Strong project management and report writing abilities.
• Proven experience with protected species surveys and mitigation design.
• Excellent client‑facing and communication skills.
• Member of CIEEM (Chartered status desirable) and a full UK driving licence.
• Right to work in the UK and ability to work from the Cambridge office.
