Principal Ecologist – Senior Consultancy Role

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to join a leading environmental consultancy in Glasgow. The role involves delivering high‑quality ecological solutions across infrastructure, development, utilities, conservation and land‑management projects. You will work within a collaborative team that values sustainability, ecological enhancement and professional growth.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a portfolio of ecological consultancy projects from inception to completion.
• Provide expert ecological advice across multiple sectors and project types.
• Oversee ecological surveys, assessments, mitigation strategies and monitoring programmes.
• Produce, review and sign off technical reports and deliverables.
• Manage project budgets, quality standards and programme delivery.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships.
• Support business development activities, tenders and fee proposals.
• Mentor and develop junior ecologists, ensuring technical excellence.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary environmental specialists to deliver integrated solutions.
• Ensure compliance with ecological legislation, policy and industry best practice.

Required profile

• Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences or a related discipline.
• Full membership of CIEEM, with Chartered status or progression towards chartership (highly desirable).
• Extensive experience in ecological consultancy and a strong understanding of UK ecological legislation, planning policy and industry guidance.
• Proven ability to manage complex ecological projects and multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience producing and reviewing a range of ecological reports.
• Strong understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements and implementation.
• Excellent communication, client‑management and report‑writing skills.
• Commercial awareness and a track record of contributing to business growth.
