Principal Engineer (AWS & Java)

About the role

LSEG is looking for a Principal Engineer to act as the most senior hands-on technical expert for its Risk Screening platform. The role partners with architecture, service, product and engineering teams so that agreed designs are implemented to the highest technical and operational standards. It focuses on ownership of non-functional characteristics such as end-to-end latency, cloud scalability, resilience and handling of large data sets, and is the most senior individual contributor role.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the senior-most technical authority for implementation, partnering with architects to validate designs and lead the most complex, business-critical changes
• Provide hands-on Java expertise, including concurrency, performance tuning, memory management and API design
• Define, implement and validate non-functional requirements such as latency, throughput, scalability and reliability, and drive cloud scaling and capacity management
• Solve complex technical problems and act as a point of escalation for deep technical issues
• Guide teams on AWS best practices, autoscaling, workload management and cloud implementation review
• Identify operational risks and work with SREs, platform and operations teams to improve resilience, monitoring and alerting
• Champion engineering standards, conduct technical reviews of critical changes and help reduce technical debt
• Mentor senior engineers and technical leads and influence engineering culture

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a Principal Engineer or equivalent senior technical role on large-scale production systems
• Proven ability to implement and operate distributed systems at scale, with emphasis on performance and scalability
• Strong experience with large databases or data platforms, including performance tuning
• Understanding of production operations, incident management, observability and reliability engineering
• Ability to influence and guide teams through technical credibility rather than formal authority

Required skills

• Deep hands-on Java (Java 11+ preferred), including JVM behaviour, concurrency and performance optimisation
• Strong practical experience building and running systems on AWS
• Experience with large databases or data platforms
