Rehabilitation Officer, Visual Impairment

About the role

Devon County Council is seeking a qualified Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment) to join its Countywide Sensory Team in Exeter. You will support adults who are blind, partially sighted or have dual sensory impairment, helping them live independently, confidently and safely within their communities.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the needs of individuals with visual or dual sensory impairments in homes and community settings.
• Design and deliver personalised rehabilitation programmes.
• Provide training in orientation and mobility, including long‑cane skills.
• Teach daily living skills such as cooking, personal care and home management.
• Demonstrate and train the use of assistive technology and low‑vision aids.
• Support clients to access education, employment and social opportunities.
• Collaborate with families, carers, healthcare professionals and partner organisations.
• Manage a personal caseload while receiving specialist supervision.

Required profile

• Qualified Rehabilitation Officer with experience supporting visual impairment.
• Strong understanding of emotional and social care needs of visually impaired adults.
• Excellent spoken English communication skills.
• Ability to handle complex issues with tact, persuasion and sensitivity.
• Flexibility to work across a diverse geographic area and within a multi‑professional network.
• Enhanced DBS clearance.
