School Nurse (Band 6)

About the role

The School Nurse (Band 6) will deliver a person‑centred nursing service for vulnerable school‑aged children across the Western Isles. Working closely with pupils, families, carers and partner agencies, the role focuses on prevention, early intervention and support for mental health, wellbeing and risk‑taking behaviours.

Key responsibilities

• Provide accessible school nursing care to children identified as at risk.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with families, schools and external agencies.
• Lead prevention and early‑intervention initiatives across ten priority areas.
• Manage an autonomous caseload while collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding and the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.

Required profile

• Qualified registered nurse with experience in school health or community paediatrics.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and make clinical decisions.
• Understanding of mental health, safeguarding and risk‑behaviour frameworks.
• Willingness to register with the PVG Scheme and meet NHS Scotland standards.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and health promotion.
• Case management and documentation.
• Effective communication with children, families and multi‑agency partners.
• Knowledge of NHS policies and remote‑island service delivery.

• Permanent contract – 36 hours per week.
• Salary Band 6: £43,231 – £52,679 per annum.
