Senior Electrical Commissioning Engineer – Submarines

About the role

BAE Systems is seeking a Senior Electrical Commissioning Engineer to support the commissioning of first‑of‑class electrical power and distribution systems for the next‑generation Dreadnought submarines. You will work closely with engineering, build operations, the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence to ensure safe, compliant delivery of all commissioning activities.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out commissioning and testing activities in a high‑risk environment with limited supervision.
• Liaise with Engineering, Royal Navy, MOD and Build Operations teams to ensure activities meet safety and compliance standards.
• Research, author and review design and test documentation.
• Maintain accurate records of all work in line with policy, procedure and legislation.
• Mentor less‑experienced team members within your area of expertise.
• Represent BAE Systems during Factory Acceptance Tests, off‑site testing, contractor sea trials and other out‑working activities, including potential overseas travel.
• Deliver assigned activities in accordance with company policies and legislative requirements.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of AC and DC electrical generation and power distribution systems.
• Experience with electrical distribution, fire‑protection systems and electrical testing.
• Understanding of instrumentation systems such as electrostatic discharge, low‑voltage control, data communications, PLCs and fibre optics.
• Familiarity with safety controls and procedures in high‑risk environments.
• Awareness of Nuclear Site Licence and authorisation conditions.
• Insight into how test and commissioning contribute to the wider UK defence enterprise.
