Senior Engineer – Earthworks

About the role

Blackwell Earthmoving Limited, part of Hargreaves Services Plc, delivers large‑scale bulk earthworks, soil stabilisation and land restoration for major infrastructure projects such as HS2, Sizewell C and the Lower Thames Crossing. As a Senior Engineer you will lead all earthworks activities on site, ensuring safety, efficiency and compliance with the highest quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct GNSS‑based site surveys and set out earthworks using batter rails, travellers and visualisation stake‑outs.
• Review and validate 3‑D machine‑control models for automated earthmoving equipment.
• Interpret drawings, specifications and works information to select optimal construction methods together with the Foreman.
• Prepare and maintain project documentation including plans, RAMS, ITPs and checklists.
• Manage QA processes and ensure all checks are completed before work commences.
• Perform spot soil quality tests (plasticity, moisture content) and record results.
• Support rolling‑wave planning to maintain project efficiency.
• Identify and report contractual events to the Commercial team.
• Document verbal instructions with supporting sketches and details.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years of civil engineering experience, preferably on earthworks and large‑scale infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency in site surveying, quality assurance and modern construction methods.
• Eligible for ICE membership as a graduate and committed to progressing towards IEng status.
