Senior Planning Enforcement Officer

About the role

We are looking for an experienced planning professional to join Braintree District Council as a Senior Planning Enforcement Officer. In this senior position you will manage a diverse caseload of complex, sensitive and high‑profile planning enforcement matters, ensuring compliance with local planning regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a varied caseload of planning enforcement cases, focusing on complex and high‑profile matters.
• Conduct site inspections and investigate alleged breaches of planning control.
• Prepare clear, well‑reasoned reports, formal notices and case files for legal proceedings.
• Represent the Council in court hearings and planning appeals.
• Use persuasion, negotiation and statutory enforcement powers to achieve compliance.
• Support, mentor and train junior enforcement officers.
• Contribute to service improvement initiatives and departmental objectives.

Required profile

• Proven experience working within a Local Planning Authority or equivalent environment.
• Strong knowledge of planning legislation and sound professional judgement.
• Ability to work independently, prioritise a demanding caseload and handle sensitive situations with tact and resilience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
• Commitment to delivering high‑quality work within statutory deadlines.
