Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Communication & Autism Support

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Special Needs Teaching Assistant to support children with communication and autism needs in schools across Leeds. You will work closely with teachers and therapists to create an inclusive learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑on‑one and small‑group support focusing on communication development.
• Use recognised communication methods such as PECS, BSL and Makaton.
• Promote social and emotional growth within a positive classroom atmosphere.
• Collaborate with teaching staff, therapists and other support personnel to deliver coordinated support.
• Monitor, record and adapt progress plans to meet each child’s evolving needs.

Required profile

• Experience working with children who have communication and autism needs.
• Passion for special education and inclusive practice.
• Patience, empathy and ability to adapt teaching strategies.
• Relevant qualifications in special education, autism support or related fields.
• Enhanced DBS clearance.

• PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
• BSL (British Sign Language)
• Makaton signing and language system
