Specialist Pharmacist – Mental Health (Band 7)

About the role

The Specialist Pharmacist will join a multidisciplinary team delivering clinical pharmacy services to adult mental health patients at St John’s Hospital, West Lothian. The role offers variety and requires adaptability to evolving service demands.

Key responsibilities

• Provide pharmaceutical care to vulnerable mental health patients.
• Conduct medication history reviews and offer medicines advice.
• Maintain and operate a high‑dose antipsychotic monitoring system.
• Monitor adherence to the Mental Health Act and support patient/carer education.
• Deliver specialist clinical pharmacy services within agreed standards and resources.

Required profile

• Master of Pharmacy degree (or equivalent) and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
• Completed training or demonstrated competence aligned with the role’s Skills and Attributes.
• Experience influencing prescribing and optimizing patient care.
• Strong patient‑focused approach and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills in an acute setting.
• Proactive attitude with commitment to continuous learning and alignment with NHS Lothian values.
