Surgical Oncology SHO (6‑month Fixed‑Term)

About the role

This 6‑month fixed‑term Senior House Officer (SHO) post is based in the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and offers exposure to a wide range of surgical oncology subspecialties. It is ideal for doctors who have completed foundation training and are progressing towards core surgical training.

Key responsibilities

• Support new diagnostic and follow‑up clinics across multiple tumour sites.
• Participate in theatre sessions, gaining hands‑on experience in subspecialties such as sarcoma, melanoma, breast, colorectal, gynaecology, head & neck, UGI, urology and plastic surgery.
• Provide surgical and medical on‑call cover for both Trust sites, including resident rota duties.
• Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to patient management discussions.
• Cross‑cover for colleagues during leave or absence and respond to emergencies as required.
• Engage in departmental teaching, journal clubs and continuing medical education.

Required profile

• Completed foundation training (or equivalent).
• Approaching core surgical training and eligible for a Trust grade post.
• Willingness to rotate across multiple surgical oncology subspecialties.
• Ability to work on‑call shifts and provide cross‑cover as needed.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and teaching activities.
