Tax Disputes Manager

About the role
The Tax Disputes Manager will join a specialist boutique firm that advises clients on complex HMRC enquiries, investigations and tax disputes. Working in a collaborative environment, you will lead high‑value cases from the initial enquiry through to settlement, interacting directly with HMRC investigators and senior client stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of complex HMRC tax disputes and investigations from enquiry to resolution.
- Lead COP8 and COP9 matters, including disclosure strategies, information requests and settlement negotiations.
- Advise clients on dispute strategy, technical risks and likely outcomes.
- Liaise directly with HMRC investigators, technical specialists and other professional advisers.
- Draft high‑quality technical correspondence, submissions, settlement proposals and advice reports.
- Negotiate commercially focused outcomes with HMRC on behalf of clients.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, intermediaries and stakeholders.
- Support the growth and development of the firm’s tax disputes offering.
Required profile
- Strong experience in UK tax disputes, investigations and HMRC enquiry work.
- Demonstrable experience handling COP8 and COP9 investigations.
- Proven ability to manage complex tax disputes independently and negotiate with HMRC.
- Professional qualification such as CTA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent is advantageous.
- Experience advising high‑net‑worth individuals, entrepreneurs, trusts or privately owned companies is a plus.
Required skills
- Expert knowledge of HMRC Code of Practice 8 (COP8) investigations.
- Expert knowledge of HMRC Code of Practice 9 (COP9) investigations.
- Technical understanding of HMRC enquiry procedures, disclosures, penalties and settlements.
