Technical Director (Roads)

About the role

WSP is looking for an enthusiastic Technical Director to join its Roads team in Scotland & the North East. This senior position will lead large, complex road projects, drive technical excellence, and strengthen client relationships across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage multidisciplinary technical project teams to deliver scope, risk, and quality.
• Act as Design Manager on complex, multi‑disciplinary road programmes.
• Provide technical leadership within the Liverpool office, conduct audits and mentor junior staff.
• Champion health, safety and wellbeing across projects.
• Oversee preparation, review and checking of all technical deliverables.
• Coordinate resources efficiently to meet fluctuating workloads.
• Collaborate with clients and design teams to deliver compliant designs on time and within budget, meeting CDM, QA and technical review requirements.
• Participate in tender bids and business development opportunities.
• Build relationships with other WSP teams to leverage additional expertise.
• Foster a fair, supportive and passionate office culture.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading large technical teams in the roads sector.
• Demonstrated technical delivery leadership and financial control of major road programmes.
• Track record as Design Manager on major road projects, integrating multi‑disciplinary designs and conducting quality audits.
• Broad experience in civil engineering and highway‑focused multi‑disciplinary projects.
• Experience managing Design‑and‑Build contracts with both technical and financial responsibility.
