Vessel Traffic Services Operator

About the role

We are looking for Vessel Traffic Services Operators to join our Coastguard Operations Centres in Dover and Falmouth. You will provide real‑time traffic information and navigational assistance to vessels, ensuring safe passage in accordance with national and international maritime rules.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver VTS services as defined by IALA recommendations to vessels within the service area.
• Take mandatory ship reports, record cargo, passenger and vessel condition data.
• Monitor and manage incidents such as groundings, fires, pollutant releases or other emergencies.
• Conduct dynamic risk assessments, plan and prioritise workload, and allocate resources to meet demand.
• Collaborate with team members and other departments to maintain high‑quality service delivery.
• Provide leadership and ensure safe working practices are followed.

Required profile

• Strong problem‑solving ability and resilience under pressure.
• Calm, professional demeanor in stressful situations.
• Possession of a VTS Operator Qualification or willingness to obtain it after appointment.
• Ability to interpret and apply national and international maritime regulations.

Required skills

• Operation of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) systems.
• Knowledge of IALA recommendations and guidelines.
• Understanding of maritime navigation and safety regulations.
