Year Group Manager (Maternity Cover)

About the role

This temporary, maternity‑cover position is a key pastoral role within Workington Academy. The Year Group Manager will act as a vital link between students, families, staff and external agencies, supporting wellbeing, attendance, behaviour and engagement during a critical stage of secondary education.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Officer and manage a child‑protection caseload.
• Lead attendance monitoring and intervention strategies for the year group.
• Support students with social, emotional, behavioural and attendance needs.
• Collaborate closely with the Director of Learning, pastoral teams and external agencies to meet student needs.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and carers.
• Contribute to assemblies, rewards, student voice initiatives and wider academy events.
• Use data to identify concerns and implement timely, effective interventions.

Required profile

• Experience working with young people in an educational, pastoral or welfare context.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Excellent organisational, time‑management and administrative abilities.
• Respect for confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider pastoral team.

Required skills

• Confidence using attendance monitoring systems.
• Knowledge of behaviour management processes.
• Familiarity with safeguarding procedures and child protection protocols.
