Behaviour Mentor / SEN Teaching Assistant (Ex-Police Officer)

About the role
We are seeking former police officers to work as Behaviour Mentors and SEN Teaching Assistants in specialist schools across Birmingham. The role supports pupils aged 5‑19 with autism, SEMH, ADHD, learning difficulties and trauma‑related needs, using your conflict‑resolution and de‑escalation experience.
Key responsibilities
- Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support to pupils throughout the school day.
- Build trusting relationships and use positive behaviour strategies and trauma‑informed approaches.
- Respond calmly to incidents of dysregulation, verbal aggression or challenging behaviour.
- Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and pastoral teams to implement behaviour support plans and EHCP targets.
- Encourage development of confidence, resilience, independence and social skills.
Required profile
- Experience working with children or young people who have trauma, behavioural or SEMH needs.
- Strong behaviour management and de‑escalation abilities.
- Patient, resilient and empathetic attitude.
- Understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
- Passion for supporting vulnerable children.
