External Examiner – BTEC Higher Nationals Early Childhood Education

About the role

The External Examiner ensures that Pearson’s BTEC Higher National qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care meet national standards. You will support centres through sampling, reporting and remedial actions, guaranteeing compliance with quality‑assurance expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake sampling of assessed student work to verify alignment with Pearson standards.
• Provide support and development to centres during the sampling process.
• Produce detailed reports on sampling outcomes and recommendations.
• Apply appropriate sanctions in consultation with the team leader when standards are not met.
• Develop targeted action plans to help centres remediate any gaps.
• Facilitate the Senior External Examiner in sourcing training and standardisation materials.
• Report back to Pearson and centres within agreed service‑level agreements.
• Perform any other duties related to technical and professional assessment.

Required profile

• Significant experience delivering and assessing BTEC Higher National qualifications in Early Childhood Education.
• At least a Level 6 qualification and a relevant competence qualification for the sector.
• Annual participation in online training and successful completion of standardisation activities.
• Evidence of recent CPD in the sector (desirable).
• Willingness to use technology‑based approaches for communication and support.

Required skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication, IT and interpersonal skills.
• Strong knowledge of BTEC specifications for the subject area.
• Customer‑focused mindset with the ability to meet deadlines.
• Ability to develop and monitor clear action plans and work effectively in a team.
• Word processing and intermediate Microsoft Excel skills (desirable).
