Head of Regulatory EDI (Maternity Cover)

About the role

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is seeking a senior leader to drive its Regulatory Equality, Diversity and Inclusion agenda on a maternity‑cover basis. You will shape evidence‑led regulatory practice, ensuring fairness across fitness‑to‑practice, registration, revalidation and education processes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of the Regulatory Fairness plan, identifying and addressing inequalities in regulatory outcomes.
• Use data, insight and evaluation to design targeted actions that deliver sustainable improvement.
• Advise senior leaders, including the Council and Executive Board, on complex EDI matters and challenge bias.
• Build strong relationships across the NMC, aligning regulatory and employer EDI commitments.
• Develop and manage a high‑performing Regulatory EDI team, fostering an inclusive and psychologically safe environment.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering EDI strategies within a regulatory, policy or legal context.
• Deep knowledge of equality legislation and the Public Sector Equality Duty.
• Credibility to influence and constructively challenge senior stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills, using evidence to shape decisions.
• Excellent interpersonal and leadership abilities with a commitment to inclusive culture.
• Experience leading teams, supporting performance and driving continuous improvement.
