About the role

The Faculty of Advocates seeks a lay member to sit on its Complaints Committee and Disciplinary Tribunal. This part‑time, five‑year appointment provides an external perspective on complaints concerning the conduct of Scottish advocates.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in investigations and determinations of complaints referred by the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission.
  • Sit on either the Complaints Committee or the Disciplinary Tribunal for each case, ensuring at least 50% lay representation.
  • Contribute non‑legal expertise to promote fairness, transparency and public confidence.
  • Attend hearings as required, typically 3‑5 days per year.
  • Undertake training on Faculty disciplinary rules and procedures.

Required profile

  • Not a qualified legal professional; experience in business, finance, healthcare, HR, community engagement or similar fields.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Track record of senior or managerial responsibilities.
  • Commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion.
  • Willingness to undergo a full disclosure check and demonstrate good character (no unspent convictions).
