Legal Advisor – Government Legal Department

About the role

The Government Legal Department is seeking qualified legal professionals to join its team of advisors. As a Legal Advisor you will work alongside ministers and senior officials, providing high‑quality legal advice on a wide range of public‑sector matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and guidance to government departments on legislation, policy and regulatory issues.
• Handle a diverse caseload covering litigation, commercial, employment and EU law matters.
• Draft, review and interpret statutory instruments and other legal documents.
• Collaborate with other legal professionals across government to ensure consistent, risk‑based advice.
• Support ministers and senior officials in parliamentary and media scrutiny contexts.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strategic and creative thinking with strong analytical judgement.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to consider diverse viewpoints.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly.
• Willingness to work collaboratively and at pace in a high‑visibility environment.
