About the role
The Mortuary Assistant will work within the Mortuary at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, one of the largest mortuary facilities in the UK. The role supports the Pathology service by handling deceased patients, maintaining accurate records and assisting clinical and forensic teams. It is a permanent full‑time position with a rotational shift pattern.
Key responsibilities
- Receive deceased from wards or community, verify identification and follow strict protocols.
- Complete and maintain all statutory documentation, including consent, cremation and release forms.
- Record valuables, jewellery and personal items in the property register and ensure proper hand‑over to funeral directors or police.
- Prepare bodies for viewing, identification, photography, fingerprinting and forensic examination as directed.
- Assist Anatomical Pathology Technicians and Crime Scene Officers with examinations and equipment.
- Maintain up‑to‑date mortuary records and ensure confidentiality of patient information.
Required profile
- High level of attention to detail and ability to follow regulated procedures.
- Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment.
- Ability to work shift patterns, including evenings and weekends.
- Professional demeanor when interacting with relatives, police and healthcare staff.
Required skills
- Accurate record‑keeping and data entry.
- Basic computer literacy for mortuary information systems.
- Understanding of health and safety and infection control standards.
