Planning Officer & Principal Planning Officer – Hybrid (Cumbria)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Planning Officer and a Principal Planning Officer to support the Development Management service in Cumbria. The positions are hybrid, based in Westmorland with occasional visits to Penrith, Barrow‑in‑Furness and Kendal.

Key responsibilities

• Review and assess planning applications to ensure compliance with local and national policies.
• Provide guidance to developers, residents and stakeholders on land‑use, design, sustainability and environmental matters.
• Facilitate public consultations and coordinate with transport, infrastructure and heritage teams.
• Monitor ongoing developments, enforce planning conditions and address breaches.
• Collaborate with internal departments to balance economic, environmental and social objectives.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a similar planning role within a Local Authority.
• Strong understanding of planning legislation, policy and development management processes.
• Ability to work independently and travel to multiple sites as required.

Required skills

• Knowledge of UK planning regulations and guidance.
• Experience with planning application assessment and condition monitoring.
