Principal Accountant – Public Sector (London)

About the role

This temporary Principal Accountant position is based within a London local authority. You will lead the Accounting & Finance team in delivering accurate financial records, supporting budget processes and ensuring compliance with public sector regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and review financial statements and management reports for accuracy and compliance.
• Support budget planning, monitoring and forecasting activities.
• Provide financial advice and guidance to internal stakeholders.
• Ensure adherence to relevant financial regulations and internal procedures.
• Analyse financial data to inform strategic decision‑making.
• Oversee account reconciliations and maintain robust financial controls.
• Collaborate with other departments to streamline financial operations.
• Respond to audit queries and implement audit recommendations.

Required profile

• Strong background in Accounting & Finance within a local authority.
• Professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA) or equivalent experience.
• Excellent knowledge of financial regulations and compliance standards.
• Proficiency in financial analysis and reporting.
• Effective communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
• High attention to detail and a methodical approach to processes.
