About the role

As a Project Design Engineer based in Birmingham, you will lead the delivery of engineering projects for an industrial and manufacturing client. The role combines technical design, risk management and on‑site support to ensure projects meet specifications, budgets and client expectations.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop customer‑focused, cost‑effective technical solutions that meet operational and commercial requirements.
  • Provide technical support during bids and proposals, defining solutions, identifying risks and creating robust designs.
  • Produce and maintain engineering layouts and drawings, including 2D GA drawings, 3D CAD models, installation plans and equipment/interface designs.
  • Coordinate project delivery with internal teams, customers and suppliers to meet schedules, milestones and engineering commitments.
  • Manage supplier integration and equipment interfaces, reviewing technical submissions and resolving queries.
  • Identify, track and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle, maintaining risk registers.
  • Support site activities such as Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, installation, commissioning, issue resolution and project hand‑over.
  • Ensure quality, safety and regulatory compliance by maintaining controlled documentation and supporting audits, meeting CE/UKCA requirements.

Required profile

  • Proven experience delivering capital equipment projects within the food manufacturing or processing industry.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into practical, robust engineering solutions.
  • Strong competence in managing technical risk and coordinating multidisciplinary teams and suppliers.
  • Good understanding of automated production lines, machinery integration, food‑industry standards and CE/UKCA compliance.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and communication skills.
