Qualified Lawyer (Grade 7) – Public Sector Legal Role

About the role

We are seeking qualified lawyers (Grade 7) to join the Government Legal Department (GLD) in Leeds. As a senior legal professional you will provide high‑profile advice to Ministers and senior officials across a wide range of policy areas, from litigation and commercial matters to employment and EU legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and guidance to government departments and senior officials.
• Draft, review and interpret legislation and policy documents.
• Manage a caseload of litigation, advisory, commercial and employment matters.
• Collaborate with other legal professionals across the civil service.
• Contribute to the development of legal strategy and risk assessment.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strong analytical and judgement skills with the ability to give balanced, risk‑based advice.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
• For London‑based posts, DV security clearance may be required.
