About the role
This full‑time, long‑term position supports a specialist SEN school in Erdington, Birmingham. You will work with pupils across KS3, KS4 and Post‑16 who have autism and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them engage safely and positively with their education.
Key responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for students with autism and SEMH needs.
- Assist pupils in accessing learning during lessons and intervention sessions.
- Use positive behaviour management strategies to de‑escalate challenging situations.
- Help students regulate emotions and re‑engage with learning after dysregulation.
- Build trusting, professional relationships that promote independence.
- Implement behaviour support plans and EHCP targets consistently.
- Encourage development of social skills, emotional resilience and positive learning behaviours.
- Collaborate with teachers, SENCo, therapists and external professionals.
- Monitor progress and communicate updates to relevant staff.
Required profile
- Experience supporting children or young people with autism, SEMH or additional learning needs.
- Confidence in managing challenging behaviours with a calm, consistent approach.
- Patient, resilient and able to remain composed in demanding situations.
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Ability to set clear boundaries while maintaining a nurturing approach.
- Commitment to helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
- Reliability, flexibility and interest in a long‑term temp‑to‑perm role.

- Ability to implement and follow behaviour support plans.
