Senior C&I Functional Design Engineer

About the role

We are Rolls‑Royce SMR, developing the world’s first small modular nuclear reactor. The Senior C&I Functional Design Engineer will lead the creation of functional specifications that define how the plant’s control, protection and automation systems operate, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development of C&I functional specifications for systems across the RR SMR plant.
• Capture, structure and define plant control functions and translate them into implementable system requirements.
• Support the development of the plant operating philosophy and ensure alignment with overall plant needs.
• Produce clear functional documentation, diagrams, descriptions and structured design justifications.
• Collaborate with C&I architects, system owners, plant engineering and modelling teams.
• Lead work packages, including breakdown, planning and delivery.
• Support technical decision‑making and ensure multidisciplinary alignment.
• Contribute to verification and validation of functional designs and requirements.
• Present functional designs to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Mentor and support junior engineers within the C&I function.

Required profile

• Significant experience in power plant operation and control or equivalent industrial environment.
• Proven ability to lead work packages and drive technical decisions.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.
