Senior School Admissions Officer

About the role

The Senior School Admissions Officer will lead the in‑year admissions and pupil‑tracking service for the local authority, ensuring compliance with safeguarding and quality‑assurance procedures. Working closely with schools, social care and other partners, the role guarantees that every child is placed promptly and safely according to statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Manage day‑to‑day operations of in‑year admissions, tracking each application from receipt to placement.
• Allocate school places outside the normal admission round, maintaining waiting lists in strict order and adhering to the School Admissions Code.
• Liaise with Islington and out‑of‑borough schools to offer places to unplaced children within statutory timescales.
• Monitor Day 6 provision for permanently excluded pupils and supervise PRU‑to‑PRU transfers.
• Identify vulnerable children, refer safeguarding concerns such as private fostering or trafficking to Children’s Social Care.
• Implement Islington’s Fair Access Protocol and represent the admissions team on local education boards.
• Oversee off‑rolling processes, ensuring swift return to mainstream education where home‑education is unsuitable.
• Lead safeguarding for children missing education, including those moving out of the authority or abroad, and complete statutory returns to the DfE.

Required profile

• Proven experience in managing school admissions and pupil‑tracking services.
• Strong knowledge of the School Admissions Code, safeguarding legislation and local authority duties.
• Ability to work collaboratively with schools, local authority departments and external agencies.
• Excellent organisational skills and the capacity to handle statutory deadlines.
