Specialist Inspector – Occupational Hygiene (Band 3)

About the role

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is seeking a Specialist Inspector to join its Occupational Hygiene team. This full‑time position will be based in any of the advertised locations and will involve regular travel to HSE offices, training events and site visits across the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Work as part of a specialist team to regulate workplaces, ensuring health risks are identified, evaluated and controlled.
• Provide in‑depth technical expertise on occupational hygiene matters such as COSHH, legionella and asbestos across a wide range of industries.
• Act as an independent expert witness in court proceedings related to occupational health.
• Develop and influence operational and technical policy to raise standards of control and clarify legal requirements.
• Collaborate on projects and initiatives that review and inform health and safety practice.

Required profile

• Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in occupational hygiene.
• Ability to travel regularly (approximately weekly) to other HSE offices and site locations.
• Commitment to full‑time work and to contributing to HSE’s mission of reducing work‑related ill health.
