Traffic Engineer – Highway Improvement Schemes

About the role

A Local Authority in South Gloucestershire is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer to lead a variety of traffic and highway improvement schemes. You will work from concept through to construction, delivering projects such as pedestrian and cycle routes, traffic calming measures, and speed limit reviews.

Key responsibilities

• Design and supervise traffic engineering schemes from conception to implementation.
• Liaise with internal teams on street lighting, structures and traffic signals.
• Prepare construction information and Health & Safety documentation in line with CDM Regulations.
• Monitor project budgets and programme delivery.
• Conduct public consultations and engage with residents, councillors and parish councils.
• Work with legal teams to advertise Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and prepare objection reports.
• Provide design support during construction and attend site visits as required.

Required profile

• Qualified Traffic Engineer with proven highways and traffic engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).
• Thorough understanding of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) and the Traffic Signs Manual.
• Experience preparing and delivering traffic management and highway improvement schemes.
• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and communicate with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Full, current UK driving licence and willingness to attend site visits.
