Project Manager – Public Sector Service Transformation

About the role

Vargo is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead delivery within a service‑transforming workstream of a multi‑million‑pound public sector programme. Based in London with occasional office attendance, you will coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality digital services at pace.

Key responsibilities

• Lead delivery of a defined service or workstream within a wider transformation programme.
• Develop and maintain project plans, milestones and delivery roadmaps.
• Manage scope, timelines, risks, issues and dependencies.
• Ensure alignment with GDS lifecycle phases (Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live).
• Apply programme governance and provide accurate reporting to the Programme Manager.
• Facilitate workshops, planning sessions and stakeholder meetings.
• Support business readiness, transition and operational embedding.
• Manage project budgets, resource allocation and supplier relationships within delegated authority.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering projects in complex public sector environments.
• Background in digital or service transformation programmes.
• Strong understanding of GDS service standards and agile delivery principles.
• Experience managing risks, dependencies and reporting within structured governance frameworks.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Consultancy or client‑facing delivery experience.
• Relevant project delivery certifications (PRINCE2, MSP, Agile or equivalent).
