Cemetery Operative – Grave Preparation & Grounds Maintenance

About the role

The Cemetery Operative will work at Kings Norton Cemetery and other sites across Birmingham, providing high‑quality grave preparation and grounds maintenance services for bereaved families and associated agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Excavate, shore and prepare graves for interment, including placement of artificial grass mats, lower ropes and stretchers.
• Backfill graves after interment and tidy the immediate area.
• Perform non‑contracted cemetery grounds maintenance tasks as outlined in the maintenance document.
• Lock and unlock cemetery gates and report any security issues.
• Operate a range of vehicles and equipment, including van/car tractor, mini tractor, trailer dumper, excavator and roadsweeper.

Required profile

• Ability to work as part of a team and deliver a respectful service to the bereaved.
• Willingness to follow security procedures and report issues promptly.
• Flexibility to work across multiple cemetery sites in Birmingham.
