Highways Inspector – London (Canning Town)

About the role

Join a forward‑thinking organisation dedicated to safe and efficient road infrastructure. As a Highways Inspector you will ensure compliance with the Highways Act 1980, keeping the network safe for all users across Canning Town and surrounding areas.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out routine and ad‑hoc inspections within an assigned geographic area.
• Identify defects, record findings on mobile devices and propose remedial actions.
• Oversee internal and third‑party works, ensuring they meet safety specifications.
• Assist the Deputy Roads Manager with permits and traffic‑management plan reviews.
• Supervise works during day and night shifts, enforcing health and safety standards.
• Engage with the public, handle complaints, conduct investigations and, if required, represent the authority in court.
• Support emergency response and winter‑season maintenance activities.
• Maintain a company vehicle responsibly.

Required profile

• City & Guilds LANTRA Safety Highways Inspector qualification.
• GCSE grade C or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
• Minimum 1 year experience in highway maintenance or related inspections.
• Valid driver’s licence.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of highway safety legislation and inspection procedures.
• Excellent organisational abilities and adaptability to changing demands.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
