Lay Member for Faculty of Advocates Complaints Committee

About the role

The Faculty of Advocates seeks a lay member to sit on its Complaints Committee and, where appropriate, its Disciplinary Tribunal. This unpaid, five‑year appointment provides an external perspective on complaints concerning the conduct of Scottish Bar members.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in hearings of the Complaints Committee and/or Disciplinary Tribunal, ensuring fair and consistent decision‑making.
• Review evidence and deliberations related to complaints about the conduct of Advocates.
• Contribute non‑legal expertise to discussions, reflecting broader societal, ethical, and industry viewpoints.
• Maintain confidentiality and uphold the highest standards of integrity.

Required profile

• Not a qualified legal professional; experience in business, finance, healthcare, HR, community engagement or similar fields.
• Demonstrable analytical and problem‑solving abilities; track record of senior‑level responsibility.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion and public confidence in legal processes.
• Willingness to undergo a full disclosure check and demonstrate good character (no unspent convictions).
