Mechanical Engineer – Nuclear, Offshore & Renewables

About the role

Assystem is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join its Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit in Sunderland. You will work on multidisciplinary projects for nuclear, marine and oil & gas clients, delivering high‑quality engineering solutions while collaborating with a hybrid team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and plan project tasks for a team of engineers, coordinating with project management.
• Develop and deliver engineering solutions across mechanical and structural domains.
• Provide regular technical progress updates to the Lead Engineer and Project Manager.
• Mentor junior and graduate engineers, offering technical guidance.
• Manage time effectively to meet deadlines, cost targets and quality standards with minimal supervision.

Required profile

• Minimum 2:1 BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Relevant senior engineering experience in offshore, renewables, nuclear or other highly regulated sectors.
• Strong background in mechanical and structural engineering and the full design cycle from concept to manufacture.
• Familiarity with European and offshore standards such as Eurocode 3 and DNV.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software – Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and/or Catia.
• Experience using MathCAD for calculations.
• Finite Element Analysis expertise, preferably with ANSYS Workbench.
• Knowledge of non‑linear and fatigue FEA, DNV and Eurocode guidelines.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes including welding and machining.
• Ability to produce technical reports, design and substantiation documents, and assembly procedures.
