Band 6 Substance Misuse Nurse – Prison Healthcare

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate Band 6 Substance Misuse Nurse to join our team at HMP Highdown and HMP Downview. This full‑time, 35‑hour position offers the chance to deliver high‑quality clinical care to individuals with drug and alcohol dependencies within a secure prison environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive assessments, develop treatment plans and manage a clinical caseload for service users with substance misuse needs.
• Administer and safely manage prescribed medications.
• Collaborate with prison staff, healthcare professionals and partner agencies to ensure seamless, person‑centred care.
• Perform risk assessments and respond confidently to complex situations.
• Promote recovery and wellbeing through evidence‑based interventions.
• Provide clinical supervision to junior colleagues and deputise for the Lead Nurse when required.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with a current NMC registration.
• Experience working with substance misuse, mental health or complex clinical needs.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong clinical judgement, excellent communication and a compassionate approach.
• Commitment to delivering safe, person‑centred care in line with the NMC Code.
